Qualifying for SSDI with Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, leading to symptoms like muscle weakness, fatigue, vision problems, and cognitive difficulties. If MS makes it impossible to work, you may be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).

The Social Security Administration (SSA) evaluates MS under strict medical guidelines. To qualify, you must have severe limitations, such as difficulty walking, using your hands, seeing clearly, or remembering and processing information. If you don’t meet the exact criteria, the SSA will assess whether your symptoms prevent you from performing any job through a Residual Functional Capacity (RFC) evaluation.

A strong SSDI application requires detailed medical records, including MRI scans, physician notes, and documentation of how your condition has worsened over time. A statement from your doctor explaining how MS limits your ability to work can also strengthen your claim. Since MS symptoms can fluctuate, it’s important to provide evidence of how the disease affects you on a daily basis, not just on bad days.

Many MS-related SSDI claims are denied initially, but appealing with additional medical evidence can increase your chances of approval. A disability attorney can help navigate the process. If MS has made working impossible, SSDI benefits can provide financial relief and stability.
